About Teeth Whitening
Teeth darken with time. Coffee, tea, red wine, tobacco and simple aging deposit stain in the microscopic pores of enamel, and no amount of brushing removes it. Professional whitening does, safely and predictably. Under a dentist's supervision, a peroxide gel penetrates enamel and breaks apart the stain molecules, lifting the shade of your teeth several levels without harming the tooth.
The whitening we provide at Regency Dental Group is custom-tray whitening. We take an impression or digital scan and make thin, clear trays that fit your teeth exactly. You wear the trays with professional-strength gel for a set period each day, usually for about two weeks, and watch the change happen gradually in the mirror. Because the trays fit precisely, the gel stays on the teeth and off the gums, which makes this method more comfortable and more even than drugstore strips, and because you keep the trays, you can touch up in the years ahead with a fresh tube of gel rather than starting over.
Whitening is safe for healthy teeth and gums, and a brief exam before you begin makes sure it will work for you. Peroxide does not change the color of fillings, crowns or veneers, so if you have visible dental work in the front of your mouth we will talk through the sequence: whiten first, then match any new restoration to your brighter shade. Some patients experience temporary sensitivity during whitening; we adjust wear time or provide a desensitizing gel, and it resolves when treatment ends.
Whitening is often the first step in a larger cosmetic plan. It pairs naturally with bonding to repair small chips and with veneers for teeth that whitening alone cannot fix, such as deeply stained or misshapen teeth. For many patients, though, whitening on its own delivers the change they were hoping for at a fraction of the cost.
Benefits
- Noticeably brighter teeth, often within two weeks
- Custom trays for even results and gum comfort
- Reusable trays make future touch-ups inexpensive
- Dentist-supervised for safety and predictable results
- A simple first step before other cosmetic treatment
Is it right for you?
Adults with healthy teeth and gums whose teeth have yellowed or darkened from coffee, tea, wine, tobacco or age. Whitening works best on yellow and brown stains and less well on gray tones or stains from certain antibiotics, which may call for veneers instead. Patients with untreated cavities or gum disease should have those addressed first. Whitening does not change the color of existing crowns, veneers or fillings. We do not recommend whitening for children, pregnant patients, or anyone with severe sensitivity that has not been evaluated.

What to expect at your visit
Your first visit takes about 20 minutes for an exam, shade photo and impression or scan. Within about a week your trays are ready; we show you how to load the gel and confirm the fit. At home you wear the trays for the prescribed time each day, typically 30 to 60 minutes or overnight depending on the gel strength. Most patients see change within a few days and reach their final shade in about two weeks. A short follow-up visit records your new shade and sets a touch-up plan.
Why choose Regency Dental Group
We whiten under a dentist's supervision, which means a quick exam first, professional-strength gel, trays that fit properly, and a plan for any sensitivity. That combination produces a more even, longer-lasting result than over-the-counter kits and avoids the gum irritation that ill-fitting strips cause. Because Dr. Carter also provides bonding and veneers, he can tell you honestly whether whitening alone will get you where you want to be or whether another approach fits better. Whitening is an affordable cosmetic service, and CareCredit is available if you are combining it with other treatment.
Aftercare
For the first 48 hours after each session avoid strongly colored foods and drinks. Long term, limit coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco or rinse with water after them. Touch up with a fresh tube of gel every six to twelve months as needed. Keep regular cleanings, which remove surface stain and keep your result bright.
Cost, insurance and timing
Whitening is a cosmetic service and is not covered by dental insurance. We quote a flat fee that includes trays, initial gel and the follow-up visit; touch-up gel is purchased separately. If you have front-tooth restorations, plan on replacing them after whitening if a shade mismatch would show.
Frequently asked questions
How long does teeth whitening last?
Typically one to three years depending on diet and habits, and touch-ups with your existing trays extend the result indefinitely.
Is whitening safe for enamel?
Yes, when used as directed under a dentist’s supervision. Peroxide gel does not damage enamel; temporary sensitivity is the main side effect and resolves after treatment.
Will whitening work on my crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening changes only natural tooth structure. We will plan the sequence so any new restorations match your brighter shade.
Why not just use drugstore strips?
Strips can help mildly, but they are lower strength, fit imperfectly, and often irritate gums. Custom trays deliver professional gel evenly and comfortably.
