About Orthodontics & Braces
It is never too late to improve your smile. Straight teeth are easier to clean, wear more evenly, and put less strain on the jaw joints, so orthodontic treatment is about health as much as appearance. Braces and aligners correct a wide range of problems, crowding, spacing, overbite, underbite, crossbite and open bite, and they work for adults just as well as for teenagers. A growing share of the orthodontic patients in any modern practice are adults who never had treatment as kids or whose teeth have shifted since.
At Regency Dental Group, orthodontic care begins with an evaluation as part of your regular exam. Dr. Carter looks at how your teeth fit together, whether crowding is contributing to decay or gum problems, whether wear patterns suggest a bite issue, and, for children, whether the jaws and teeth are developing on schedule. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic evaluation by age 7, when early intervention can sometimes prevent a more complex problem later, and we will tell you if that evaluation is warranted for your child.
Treatment options range from traditional braces to clear aligners, and the right choice depends on the complexity of the case, your age, your preferences and your budget. For cases appropriate to a general dental practice, treatment may be provided in our office. For complex bite corrections, cases that involve jaw growth, surgical orthodontics, and many children's cases, an orthodontist is the right provider, and we will refer you and coordinate care.
Orthodontics is a recognized dental specialty, and Dr. Lance Carter is a general dentist, not an orthodontist. We say that plainly because you deserve to know who is treating you and why. What you get from us is an honest evaluation, a clear explanation of your options, and a referral when a specialist will get you a better result.
Benefits
- Evaluation of alignment and bite at your regular exam
- Honest guidance on braces, aligners and timing
- Treatment for cases suited to a general practice
- Early screening for children around age 7
- Coordinated referral to an orthodontist for complex cases
Is it right for you?
Adults, teens and children who have crowded, spaced or crooked teeth, a bite that does not fit together well, or teeth that have shifted after previous treatment. Healthy teeth and gums are a prerequisite; any decay or gum disease is treated first. Complex cases, patients who may need jaw surgery, and many growing children are best treated by an orthodontist, and we will refer you when that is the case.

What to expect at your visit
An orthodontic evaluation takes about 30 minutes and includes photographs, X-rays and a discussion of what we see. If treatment is provided in our office, expect regular visits every four to eight weeks over a period of several months to two years depending on the case, followed by retainers. If you are referred, we send your records to the orthodontist and remain involved in your overall care.
Why choose Regency Dental Group
You already trust us with your family's dental health, and orthodontic screening is built into every exam, so nothing is missed and nothing is oversold. Dr. Carter gives you a straight answer about whether treatment is worthwhile, what it would involve, and who should provide it. When we refer to an orthodontist, we stay your dental home for cleanings and any restorative work, and we coordinate timing so, for example, whitening and bonding happen after braces come off.
Cost, insurance and timing
Many dental plans include a lifetime orthodontic benefit, most often for patients under 19, and some cover adults. We verify your benefits before treatment. Fees depend on the complexity and length of treatment and are quoted in writing. Treatment provided by an orthodontist is billed by that office.
Frequently asked questions
Are you an orthodontist?
No. Dr. Carter is a general dentist. We evaluate, advise, treat cases appropriate to a general practice, and refer complex cases to an orthodontist.
Am I too old for braces?
No. Healthy teeth can be moved at any age. Adults are a large share of orthodontic patients today.
When should my child be evaluated?
Around age 7, when the first adult molars and incisors are in and growth patterns can be assessed.
Braces or clear aligners?
It depends on the case. Aligners suit mild to moderate alignment issues; braces handle a wider range of bite problems. We will explain which fits your situation.
Dr. Lance Carter is a general dentist licensed by the Dental Board of California. Services on this page that are associated with a recognized dental specialty are provided by a general dentist who is not a licensed specialist in that field. When a case is better served by a specialist, we say so and coordinate the referral.
