How do dental hygienists actually learn to clean teeth in school? In this video, I’m breaking down what dental hygiene school training really looks like, including how students practice scaling before ever working on real patients. As a registered dental hygienist, I explain how we first learn tooth anatomy, instrumentation, angulation, pressure, fulcrums, and patient positioning in the classroom and pre-clinic, then practice on typodont models, simulation units, and often on each other in supervised settings before moving on to real patients in clinic.
